With this section of our website, we hope to be able to answer any commonly-asked questions either about our company or our products. Please email us with any questions you may have.

What is the content of your wicks?

Country Affair’s wicks are made of either cotton or zinc core. We DO NOT use LEAD wicks.

Is there a way to tell the difference between lead and zinc cored wicks?

Snip a 1/2 inch off of a NEW wick and remove the wire. Rub the wire across a sheet of paper. The lead wire will write like a pencil, the Zinc wire will not.

For further information on the recent news releases regarding lead wicks visit www.candles.org, website of the National Candle Association.

What precautions should I take when burning candles?

Basically, use common sense. Keep all candles out of the reach of children and pets. Never, never leave a burning candle unattended. In addition, do not burn a candle in a container below 1/2″ from the bottom. The container should also be placed on a heat resistant surface such as a coaster or tray.

What causes black soot on wicks when burning?

This occurs when the wick needs to be trimmed. Also make sure the candle is not in a draft. Extinguish flame, trim wick, making sure the carbon deposit and wick trimmings do not remain in the molten wax as this may cause a fire hazard. ALWAYS keep candle wicks trimmed to 1/2″ before and during burning.

Are there special instructions for burning your primitive “ICE”candles?

Yes. Because the coating is a harder wax than the core, the pillars and loaves do burn differently. These should be burned long enough to allow the wax to liquify to 1/2″ from edge. If you wish you can then extinguish, allow to cool, trim the wick to 1/4 and relight. Do not allow to burn more than 1/2″ from edge; if the outer shell becomes soft the wax may leak through the sides.

Always burn pillars and loaves on a heat resistant surface. The “new” pyramid pillar will drip down the sides creating a sculptured effect. Precautions should be taken to protect your surface.

The tapers and lamp candles will drip a little. Keep out of drafts to minimize Dripping.

Which fragrance is best for smoke or cooking odors?

All our scents will cover odors and smoke. Our “ Smoke & Odor Avenger” works best. It acts as a neutralizer rather than masking the problem.
